Using T-Mobile Sony Ericsson T610/T616 as a bluetooth GPRS modem for OSX

I wanted to use my Sony Ericsson T610 as a bluetooth modem to get my Apple OSX laptop on the internet using my T-Mobile GPRS cellular plan.

Unfortunately, finding the information for this proved to be daunting.

So, here's the final solution.

First make sure your phone is paired with your computer. You should be able to use the bluetooth device browser to look at your phone.

You should also be able to use the browser to access tzones and the internet on your phone.

Then you need to construct the Data Comm account for the internet. T-Mobile can send this to your phone if you have the unlimited internet plan.

On phone: Main Menu -> Connectivity -> Data Comm -> Data Accounts -> New Account
  GPRS Data
Give it a name such as 'T-MobileInternet'
  APN: internet2.voicestream.com
  user: (none needed)
  passwd: (none needed)
Then you need to setup your networking prefs on your Mac
On Mac: System Prefs -> Network -> USB Bluetooth Modem Adaptor
  TCP/IP:
    Configure: 'Using PPP'
  PPP:
    Service Provider, Name, Password: Whatever..
[[To construct the telephone number we need the data conn. profile CID.
On phone: Main Menu -> Connectivity -> Data Comm -> Data Accounts
Select the account you need for bluetooth internet ('T-MobileInternet')
The CID= number should be displayed here - that replaces the '2' below]]
    Telephone Number: *99***2#
[[might be able to use *99# for service *without* the unlimited internet plan]]
    PPP Options:
      Send PPP echo packets: OFF
      Use TCP header compression: OFF
    Bluetooth Modem:
Modem: Ericsson Infrared (has the right settings even for bluetooth)
Wait for dial tone before dialing: OFF
      Enable error correction: ON
Turn off all other networking, and you should be able to connect through Internet Connect or through the modem on the menu bar (if it's there).

From http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/tzones/:

The dial string is usually *99# for Nokia Phones that already have T-Mobile Unlimited Internet (APN: internet2.voicestream.com for $19.99/mo) or T-Mobile VPN (APN: internet3.voicestream.com for $19.99/mo).
