ebay bug 1

EBay had a bug in their "update credit card" code.

When I tried to update my card I was sent to a page that said:

Update Credit Card block

Our records indicate that you have been suspended from trading on eBay. Unfortunately, we cannot complete your request for a new account or to sell on eBay.

What's funny isn't the bug, but their inability to discuss things.

Dave tells ebay (through web form)
---------------
When I try to update my credit card ebay tells me that I am suspended,
which, to the best of my knowledge, I am not, nor should I be.

Furthermore, the help given on the error page for 'update credit card
block' tells me to go to the ebay's webform and choose the topic
'suspension concerns' which does not exist on the URL it gives me.

Ebay replies ------------ Thank you for contacting eBay's Trust and Safety Department about an email message you received. The email you reported did not originate from, nor is it endorsed by, eBay. We are very concerned about this problem and are working diligently to address the situation... [ebay further discusses spoofed email messages]
Dave says --------- I really hate ebay support. I sent in this question, and ebay sent me the wrong answer, and had no way for me to follow up. Here is my question again, please read it carefully. When i try to update my credit card on the ebay site (ebay.com), ebay tells me that i am suspended, which, to the best of my knowledge, i am not, nor should i be. Furthermore, the help given on the error page for 'update credit card block' tells me to go to the ebay's webform and choose the topic 'suspension concerns' which does not exist on the url it gives me.
Ebay replies ------------ Thanks for writing to us. I appreciate the opportunity to answer your question in regards to your account status. I reviewed our records and found that your account is in perfect standing. You will be able to list items successfully. I would suggest that you go ahead and try, again to place your credit card, by following the below mentioned steps: 1. Select the "site map" on the Navigation Bar located at the top of most eBay pages. 2. Select "Place or update my credit card on file with eBay" located in the "Services" section under "Seller Accounts." 3. Enter the information on our secure form, and click "submit."
Dave says --------- > I reviewed our records and found that your account is in perfect > standing. I *KNOW* this. > I would suggest that you go ahead and try, again to place your credit > card, by following the below mentioned steps: I *DID* exactly those steps before ever mailing ebay, and that's exactly where I see the problem. I understand that your records show that my account is in good standing, but something at ebay is broken and the code that updates my credit card thinks it is suspended.
Ebay replies ------------ I understand that your credit card was turned down when you tried to use it on eBay. I'm sorry for any frustration that this may have caused you. I can't give you the exact reason why this happened because credit card companies don't provide us with the reason your card wasn't accepted. [Ebay then discusses reasons why credit cards are declined] [Best of all, ebay also explains, again, the steps to update my credit card, the exact steps that I did in the *first* place that saw the bug]
Dave says --------- > I understand that your credit card was turned down when you tried to use > it on eBay. I'm sorry for any frustration that this may have caused you. Oh my god. It's a nightmare. Do you people even READ the email you are sent? I've been forced to re-ask this same question a number of times now, and every time you send me some unrelated answer. I'm willing to bet that you're not even human at this point, just some AI program that tries to send the right response according to some pattern matching, because this is nonsense. Look, I'm trying to give you my *new* credit card number because my old one is expired. This is not an issue of the credit card company accepting the card. That's not the problem. The problem is, and please, it would be so neat if you could read this and actually respond to it, because I'm trying to figure out how I can GIVE MONEY TO EBAY. Okay? Here goes. 1) My credit card is expiring. 2) I need to update the credit card information on ebay. 3) I go TO EBAY and go to the CORRECT PAGE for updating credit cards. 4) I enter my new credit card information. 5) Ebay tells me that my account is suspended. Some important facts A) My account is *NOT* suspended B) My credit card is *NOT* being declined C) I understand *HOW* to update my credit card information D) I am doing this *AT* the ebay.com website, I am not being spoofed. You people are beginning to look like fools. So far you have answered *all* the wrong questions and have completely ignored my requests. It's ludicrous when I have to fight this hard just to give a company money.
Ebay replies ------------ First of all, please acknowledge that we apologize for all inconvenience this has caused you. Moreover, rest assured that I am not some AI program responding to you. I know it is frustrating when you receive an answer that does not pertain to your question, and I sympathize, as I have been there before. At this time, you have to realize that my hands are tied when it comes to manually updating your credit card. This is for security reasons. Also, I am unable to tell you *why* your credit card is not being accepted by our system. I have just done a test on our servers over here to verify that there are no discrepancies with your account. As stated in many previous emails to you, I would suggest you contact your financial institution to guide you through the process of placing a new credit card on file. Perhaps there could be just one field that is not being recognized on our end.
Dave says --------- > At this time, you have to realize that my hands are tied when it comes > to manually updating your credit card. This is for security reasons. My god. It's like you're trying to kill me. Please read this email. Please. Please just read each sentence and please don't send me some canned response. Because you're not really paying attention here. > Also, I am unable to tell you *why* your credit card is not being > accepted by our system. I have just done a test on our servers over here The problem is NOT that my credit card is not being accepted by your system. Wait. The last 5 times I stated that, you didn't get it. So let me try again. THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT MY CREDIT CARD IS NOT BEING ACCEPTED BY YOUR SYSTEM. Are we there yet? THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT MY CREDIT CARD IS NOT BEING ACCEPTED BY YOUR SYSTEM. THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT MY CREDIT CARD IS NOT BEING ACCEPTED BY YOUR SYSTEM. THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT MY CREDIT CARD IS NOT BEING ACCEPTED BY YOUR SYSTEM. Maybe now we've finally got it. What's the problem? You could check my last five emails, or, maybe I'll state it again. When I give Ebay my new credit card information, my new information WHICH IS VALID AND ACCEPTABLE, Ebay doesn't get around to checking it - instead Ebay.com *TELLS ME* that my EBAY account has been suspended. This is not something I can check with my financial institution. And let me state again: THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT MY CREDIT CARD IS NOT BEING ACCEPTED BY YOUR SYSTEM. And I *ALSO* understand that my account *IS* in good standing with Ebay. And I understand that you can see that. We all know that. The problem is, the code for the credit card update DOES NOT KNOW THIS. It should. And that would be nice. But just maybe, just maybe the user error is not on my end. Just shockingly maybe, maybe the error is in the code at ebay. And wait - I think I need to state this again because you might not have caught on to it yet: THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT MY CREDIT CARD IS NOT BEING ACCEPTED BY YOUR SYSTEM. Before you send me another email about verifying my credit card, which, if I think I receive, I think I may have to kill myself.. Before doing that, perhaps you could look into what I'm telling you? Because just maybe it's something that someone there needs to look at. Let's explain it one last time for the executive summary: 1) My credit card is NOT BEING DECLINED BY EBAY. That is NOT THE PROBLEM 2) My account is NOT SUSPENDED. We both know that. 3) The credit card update at Ebay THINKS that my account is suspended. As we know from #2, this is not correct. Can we please fix this now? Ebay doesn't reply, so Dave says -------------------------------- > Also, I am unable to tell you *why* your credit card is not being > accepted by our system. I have just done a test on our servers over here Okay, now I'm being ignored, which isn't helping. I'm going to try to clarify this again: A) The error is NOT that my credit card is declined. B) The error IS that my EBAY account has been suspended. My **EBAY** account. It tells me that my **EBAY** account has been suspended from trading. Not that my credit card has been suspended or is not verified. So, important point #1: 1) The credit card code tells me that my **EBAY** trading account is suspended. And as WE BOTH KNOW, my ebay trading account is NOT suspended. That gives us important point #2: 2) My **EBAY** account is **NOT** suspended. So, if we put those two points together: 1) The credit card code tells me that my **EBAY** trading account is suspended. 2) My **EBAY** account is **NOT** suspended. Do you see the problem now? The problem is at ebay. There is a bug. Please fix it.

We then continued to have MANY emails go back and forth discussing their confusion over suspensions and credit cards. It was unpleasant, so on 1/30/04 I finally got the customer service number and called and talked to Arnold Jacobsen who told me he was going to escalate the issue to SafeHarbor (after going through much of the same discussion on the phone).

Tiring.

I should bill ebay for all the hours I've put into this at my normal rate. :)

Finally, though, ebay fixed the problem.
