hotmail sucks bug 1

Before you read this, please note:
I do not have a solution to this problem. I have given up on assuming that hotmail can receive or send email properly. I take any email sent to/from hotmail with a grain of salt. The fact that hotmail doesn't see this as a severe break in their service is why I think that hotmail sucks and personally would not use it, and I recommend that you don't use it either. There are many other free email options.

Carl Francis sent me a mail saying that SPF records on your domain might fix the problem. I've added SPF records and it didn't help. PLEASE DO NOT send me questions about SPF records, go to openspf.org for more info.

I also know that hotmail (and AOL) now reject email that don't have reverse DNS records setup properly. Again, I can't help you setup your reverse DNS - you need to contact your ISP about that.

Hotmail (owned by Microsoft) has a problem receiving email from my domain using the login "daves_exim" which I used to use for email.

When I changed my mail login to "daveMail" it received the mail fine, but not when I'd switch back to "daves_exim"

And the best part is that it not only wouldn't get delivered, but it also didn't go into the junk email folder and wouldn't bounce back to me.

They just plain threw it away.

I had some online friends that I thought didn't want to talk to me until I figured this out.

But once again, the real story is in the customer service nightmare that is the web - in this case, hotmail.

Note: I xxx'd out a bunch of domain/email addresses on this web page to avoid spam collection

Dave tells hotmail (through web form)
-------------------------------------
Hotmail refuses to receive email from my account: daves_exim@XXXXXX.com

I had a friend tell me they weren't receiving email from just me and
that it wasn't going in their junkmail, so I verified it by creating
a hotmail account for testing. What I've found:

1) I cannot receive email from 'daves_exim@XXXXXX.com'
2) XXXXXX.com is *NOT* on any published RBL (nor am I a spammer or open-relay).
3) Everyone else is able to receive my email without problem.

This is unacceptable - to merely take someone's personal mail and throw it away.

Please fix this as soon as possible.
You can reply to me at:
  XXXXXX@XXXXXX.com

Well, actually they didn't. They ignored the plea, but I managed to
track down some escalation email addresses which I sent the plea to,

Did you even read my email? All the information is there, and it's
me, not my friend, who can't send email to hotmail.

> - Provide us the e-mail address of your friend, from whom you are
> not receiving e-mail?

Me.

daves_exim@XXXXXX.com

I just went through customer service hell with ebay because they
couldn't just read what I typed.
Can you please save me from that again?

Thank you for contacting MSN Hotmail Technical Support.

I am sorry for the delay in responding to your e-mail message. and regret any inconvenience this might have caused to you.

I understand that you are not being able to send e-mail messages to Hotmail users.

Many factors can contribute to this problem, including ISP difficulties, connections between servers, domain blocks, and mistyped addresses.

In order to investigate your issue, please provide the following information.

  - When did this problem first occur?

  - Does the problem still exist?

  - If the e-mail message that has been sent to the Hotmail account has bounced back, please forward the bounced message.

  - What is the e-mail address of the receiver?

 - What kind of browser are you using? Who is your ISP?

We are eager to resolve this issue and look forward to receiving this information from you.

Please note that many companies and servers process an e-mail message before it is delivered and that the problem may or may not be with Hotmail. If we find that it exists in our system, we'll diligently work to solve the problem as soon as possible.

Dave says
---------
> - When did this problem first occur?

I don't know when it started, but I know it's been happening for
at least the last few weeks.

> - Does the problem still exist?

Yes.

> - If the e-mail message that has been sent to the Hotmail account
> has bounced back, please forward the bounced message.

It did not bounce.

> - What is the e-mail address of the receiver?

I've tested many hotmail addresses, such as:

XXXXXX@hotmail.com
XXXXXX@hotmail.com

> - What kind of browser are you using? Who is your ISP?

I'm not using a browser to send or receive email, and I don't really
have an ISP besides myself. I run my own network that is connected
to the net through a PacBell DSL line. I send and receive email using
unix tools, such as elm, mutt and calling sendmail directly.

This *is* a hotmail problem, here is a summary of my tests again:

I setup a hotmail account specifically for looking at email from my account.
I have no problem sending and receiving email with other people, just
with Microsoft (I just discovered tonight that the Outlook 2003 filters
are tagging my email as spam, which is ridiculous because I am not
only opposed to spam, I write software that helps filter it out.)

I own the domain "XXXXXX.com" and can legitimately mail from any login
at that domain.

When I mail from: "daves_exim@XXXXXX.com" - my email is lost. It
does not bounce, it does not go to a junk email folder, it disappears.

If I make *one* change and mail from some other address @XXXXXX.com
(such as "daveMail@XXXXXX.com") then my mail gets through with no problem.

I have tested this numerous times using "XXXXXX@hotmail.com"
as the recipient, and every single time the first email is lost and the
second email is received.

Please escalate this to the proper personnel.

I regret the delay in responding to your e-mail address.

I wish to inform you that everything is working fine from our end. I suggest that contact "XXXXXX.com" domain.

Please contact is you have any questions regarding MSN Hotmail.

Dave says
---------
Oh my god.

It's the attack of the stupid people.

Everytime I talk to customer service, I evidently get people who
can't read.

By some small chance in hell, could you possibly read any of the email
I am sending to you?

> I wish to inform you that everything is working fine from our end.

No, see, the problem is that it ISN'T working fine from your end.
Please read this email and DON'T send me some knee jerk response.

> I suggest that contact "XXXXXX.com" domain.

I *AM* the freakin' XXXXXX.com domain.

That's me.

I'm that domain.

I am NOT filtering out my own mail to you, I can personally guarantee it.
If you had read my email you would see:

1) Mail that I set the 'from field' to daves_exim@XXXXXX.com is
   IGNORED by hotmail.
2) Mail that I set the 'from field' to daveMail@XXXXXX.com, or anything
else, is NOT IGNORED by hotmail.

If I use my friends email account using HIS ISP and HIS EMAIL ACCOUNT
and HIS CLIENT (none of which is on XXXXXX.com), and setting his
from field to daves_exim@XXXXXX.com, that mail is ALSO ignored.

Are you getting this yet? Something at hotmail is throwing away
my email.

If you don't deal with this issue then I'll need to investigate
my legal options.
